How This Program Advances Community Health
Our work plan is designed to create lasting, measurable change for young people in Houston\u2019s Fifth Ward.
A Long-Term Strategy for Systems Change
- Advances CUT’s long-term strategy to strengthen youth voice and improve community health outcomes in Fifth Ward.
- Built on CUT’s EHF-supported strategic planning process, which identified activating and expanding youth leadership as a core strategy for improving mental well-being and long-term opportunity for young people.
Depth with a Ripple Effect
- During the two-year grant period, 50 youth (25 annually) will directly participate in the structured cohort model.
- Serves a focused segment of Fifth Ward youth ages 16–24, designed for depth and ripple effect.
- Each participant engages peers, families, and community leaders through listening sessions, roundtables, and youth-led projects.
- An additional 150–200 individuals annually are anticipated to be indirectly impacted through peer networks, family engagement, and community events.
Protective Factors Linked to Health Outcomes
- Participants are expected to experience measurable improvements in protective factors tied to positive health outcomes.
- Increased sense of belonging.
- Stronger connections to trusted adults.
- Improved emotional regulation.
- Greater confidence in civic participation.
- CUT aims to demonstrate at least a 25% increase in youth reporting strong belonging, connection to a trusted adult, and confidence in influencing their community.
- Assessed through pre- and post-cohort surveys and participant feedback.
- Research links these protective factors to reduced isolation, improved mental health, and long-term resilience.
Community-Level Impact
- Strengthening youth leadership and connection contributes to healthier environments where young people are more engaged and supported.
- Over time, the model builds sustainable infrastructure that promotes improved mental health, civic participation, and resilience in Fifth Ward.
